Snæfellsnes Peninsula

About the tour
When heading northwest out of Reykjavík you end up in the peninsula of Snæfellsnes. No visitor to Iceland should miss this part of the country, if only for a day.
Snæfellsnes has been called a miniature Iceland because of the many iconic natural features that can be found here – craters, waterfalls, glaciers, fumaroles, basalt cliffs, and much more.
The area surrounding the stratovolcano Snæfellsjökull has been designated one of the four National Parks by the government of Iceland. With its height of 1446m, Snaefellsjokull is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier (jökull means glacier in Icelandic) at its peak. The volcano can be seen on a clear day from Reykjavík, a total distance of about 120km! It is said that the Snæfellsjökull glacier has mystical powers and that it is the gateway to another world. It is also the setting of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The tour also takes you through the Búðahraun lava field, the coast between the small fishing villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar. The Djúpalónssandur beach, which is no less stunning than the Black Sand Beach on the Beautiful South Coast tour. It is a dazzling, wild black sand and pebble beach with amazing volcanic rocks rising directly out of the ground.
We will also take a visit to the iconic Kirkjufell mountain and the Kirkjufell waterfall. Kirkjufell is a very iconic, 463-meter high mountain that has claimed the lives of a few mountaineers. From the right angle, the mountain resembles a church steeple. You might recognize it from the season 7 episode 6 in the game of thrones when the heroes go north of the wall, described as the “arrowhead mountain”.
