Grænihryggur Hike

About the hike

This is a long day trip or about 14-16 hours total. There are 195 km between Reykjavík and Landmannalaugar, or about 3 hours by car.

We walk in and up Halldórsgil and then walk down to Jökulgil. There you have to cross the glacier river  Jökulgilskvísl 3-4 times by foot before you reach the magnificent phenomenon Grænahryggur. The whole way is a continuous feast of magnificent landscapes and endless colors in the rocks and vegetation. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful areas in Iceland, and the area you will walk through so untouched.

NOTE! The Grænihryggur hike is an advanced hike. Long day and you have to cross the glacier river Jökulkvísl by foot, about 4 times.

Why is it called Grænihryggur? The rock in Grænagil and Grænahrygg is glass-tough and the green color is caused by a bit of divalent iron in the glass.
