Mini Landmannalaugar

About the hike

Reykjanes offers many great and beautiful hiking trails, and it is quick to get there by car from the Greater Reykjavík area. The geothermal area west of Djúpavatn is a hidden gem, colorful, delicate, and beautiful.

The site is somewhat reminiscent of the Torfajökull area south of Landmannalaugar. Still, it is smaller in shape, and the colorful ridges reminiscent of Grænahrygg north of Torfajökull are pleasing to the eye.

Therefore, these clay ridges are strangely called Sogin and have been shaped by geothermal heat and volcanic activity in the bowels of the earth.

The walk is easy, and you can go from Djúpavatn and walk around the area with a stop at Spákonuvatn and Grænavatn. It is fun to go up to Grænavatnseggjar and enjoy a magnificent view of Djúpavatn, the whole of Reykjanes, and the mountains north of Reykjavík.

The hiking trail is about 8 km and takes about 4 hours, with an excellent time to enjoy the surroundings and take a good lunch break. We meet at the car park at the eastern end of Djúpavatn, where a hollow gravel road, Vigdísavallarvegur, is driven close to Kleifarvatn.

The road is accessible to all cars during the summer, but it is best to drive slowly.
